The Night Is Young marked the end of Novarro’s association with MGM. Plans to reteam him with either Jeanette MacDonald or Evelyn Laye in the operetta Love While You May were scrapped, as his contract was “abrogated by mutual consent” shortly after he finished work on The Night Is Young.

Novarro later recalled being summoned to the office of MGM general manager Eddie Mannix, who told him that his latest vehicle “wasn’t very good.” Novarro agreed. On January 3, 1935, upon receiving $19,000 as severance pay, he terminated his affiliation with the studio. The public learned of the rupture only on February 7, one day after Novarro’s thirty-sixth birthday and four weeks after the opening of The Night Is Young. MGM’s brief statement read, “While there was no disagreement, Mr. Novarro requested release from his contract at a time when the studio had a story in preparation for him, but not ready for production.”
